An RFP is similar to an Invitation to Tender (ITT). It is used to obtain information from suppliers as to how they will deliver against the contract specification and how much they would charge for providing the goods, services or works. An RFP will sometimes also ask for basic company information, similar to that requested in a Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ), such as corporate information, financial information and technical capability.
Buyers use RFQs when price is the main or only factor involved in selecting suppliers. When responding to an RFQ, suppliers will be expected to provide their most competitive price for providing the goods, services or works required. An RFQ is sometimes also called a Request for Pricing; not to be confused with a Request for Proposal as they are both abbreviated to RFP!
RFIs are, basically speaking, the private sector’s version of a PQQ and are used to obtain information from suppliers. RFI responses are then scored and those suppliers that meet the required benchmark are usually invited to submit a formal proposal.
